"Solomyn" - Re: Question about beefing up a beam to compensate for butt joints in beam - This is true. It calls to mind a situation my father had. He was a carpenter for over 35 years. I worked on the crew that he was the foreman for. We built multi-million dollar homes here on the coast of Maine. I'm talking some of the nicest houses (without being the cathedrals that are in California!) you can imagine. Anyway, he was reviewing the blueprints that an architect h...

"Rudy" - Re: attaching sink to counter bottom - I'm guessing.. is this a stainless steel sink ? Our cast iron sinks weight was enough to hold it down. I just ran a bead of silicone around where the sink was to rest, then dropped it in. The weight held it down til the silicone set up. "frankg" - attaching sink to counter bottom - I just made a new tiled kitchen sink countertop - 5/8 ply base with 1/2 inch cement/backerboard and then the tile. Job done, I lowered the sink and connected the drain - all well. But...............the scew type clamp/bolts that hook over the little 'hoops' on the side of the sink (7 of them) and tighten the sink to the counter bottom can no longer work as the counter is now too thick a...

Often, a crack of that kind can be of long standing and the building components may have ceased to move.
