How making an "extender bracket" out of an aluminum chunk; attach the brakcet using the existing screws. The new screws in the new bracket woud do the clamping for you. It had layers of linoleum on it which I removed, and then discovered some water damaged boards (I know how it happened, and fixed water problem).
