"DorkyGrin" - Re: Add Collar Beam? - Well, I think I'll add the collar ties as an added measure. I am going to use screws, though I wonder if there is some kind of metal fastener that would be better. Anyway, I Iooked at the roof line yesterday and I can a slight dip in the middle of the line, higher on the ends. I suspect that the walls are spreading somewhat causing this. I am wondering if there is a way to further secure...

"Jim in PA" - Re: Minimum clearance for suspended ceiling? - Thank you. That's not *too* much more headroom than furring strips and 12" tile attached by staples. I think cost will probably be the deciding factor (I know drywall is cheaper, but I'm tired of finishing drywall). I appreciate the information. . ...

"DorkyGrin" - Add Collar Beam? - I have a house in NE Ohio with an addition put on by the previous homeowner. We have lived here 3 years. Last winter, during extremely cold temperatures, we heard some loud noises coming from the roof of the addition. Since the addition is our master bedroom, the crack/bang noise woke me up. It was loud. I figured those noises were something to do with the house settling or something. Re...

"JerryD\(upstateNY\)" - Re: Minimum clearance for suspended ceiling? - Installing the main T's one inch below the joists will give you room to install the tile after the grid is up. The mains are usually 1¼" high, so your ceiling would finish at 2¼" below the joist. -- JerryD(upstateNY) I have read many opinions about whether drywall or suspended ceilings are preferable in basements, and I'm still undecided. Ceiling height is a significant...

JimBrowninPA@gmail.com - Minimum clearance for suspended ceiling? - I have read many opinions about whether drywall or suspended ceilings are preferable in basements, and I'm still undecided. Ceiling height is a significant factor, however, so I ask: how close to the joists can I hang the grid for a suspended ceiling? I am aware of the ceilingmax system, but I'm asking specifically about traditional suspended ceilings. Thanks! Jim . ...

"JerryD\(upstateNY\)" - Re: What size fascia board? - If you use a 2X6 fascia for the rakes and the overhang, it will work out OK. A 2X6 is 5 1/2" wide so if the soffit is 1/2" thick, that adds up to 6". When you put the roof on, you should use a drip edge on the bottom of the roof and a rake edge up the sides. Both these cover 1" below the roof. This should overlap the fascia by an inch, giving you a nice looking job. -- JerryD(up...
