The amount of paint needed also depends on the surface type you get from Hardie. The rougher the surface, more paint. Same with cedar. So its difficult to answer your question. I think it was 2-3 coats and guaranteed for 20 years. The only maintenance we've done on it is wash the dirt off this year and it looks good as new. They sell them or you could make one yourself.
