"JTMcC" - Re: Labor, future craftsmen, undocumented workers - Your arguement strikes me like this, lets say the mob controls the cost of concrete in my part of the world. You argue that we must somehow find a way to make the mob legitimate. Others, like me, argue that it's a better solution to remove the mob influence. Price up or price down, illegal influence needs to be reduced/eliminated. JTMcC. "Robert Allison"

"JTMcC" - Re: Labor, future craftsmen, undocumented workers - Our border with Mexico certainly can be secured to a high degree. The monetary cost would be partially absorbed by the drop in welfare cost's now gobbled up in huge quantities by illegals. The political cost would be a bit more fearsome, but we are headed in that direction at a good pace, you can thank Bin Laden for that. JTMcC. "Robert Allison"

"Peter Shepherd" - Re: Furring vs Sistering joists on 125 yr old ceiling? - Thanks for the closely-parsed reply! I will keep what you've recommended in mind & relay to the client. When tenants permanently gone & he guts the 2nd floor walls in a few years time is the most likely time he'd be able to implement this method. House is co-owned with ex-wife, so finances complicated. For now he'll have to deal with the immediate competing needs to complete, s...

"Peter Shepherd" - Re: Furring vs Sistering joists on 125 yr old ceiling? - Thanks for the reply. I do the best I know how, & am learning how to be firm with clients who ask for finish work before structural is done. Not doing the right thing could well turn out to be the hard way for both myself & client, and I can already think of two jobs in the last 4 years where trying to please client and naively plunging ahead may in the long run cost all of u...
