"Solomyn" - Re: Question about beefing up a beam to compensate for butt joints in beam - Thanks for the info. The wise-assed remark someone else made should be clarified. I have ran this by other carpenters, each of which have over 20 years experience. I'm sorry, call me old fashioned. But I have been in the construction industry before, and I would gladly take the advice from a man who has built more homes than the pencil pusher "structural engineer" has reviewed. ...

tbasc@bellsouth.net - Re: Stepped crack in 1930's house - links to photos - I'd look at the risks involved and compare that to your abbility to pay for a fix over time. Often, a crack of that kind can be of long standing and the building components may have ceased to move. I once had a similar situation and was told by an old and cagy structural engineer to put a gage across the crack to measure movement. A second engineer involved in new construction, said h...

"Michael" - Re: Temporary kitchen to get Certificate of Occupancy? - we had the same problem a year ago in mass.. except they shipped the wrong wood cabinets, pine instead of cherry! then they offered to give us $1000 back to keep the pine... man oh man. here's how it went for us - sink is a necessity... bought a $40 cab at the depot, cut a sheet of plywood in half, doubled it to make a countertop that held the sink to the base. $15 dollar faucet. ...

dynamorph@hotmail.com - Proper way to attach rafter header? - I am building an enclosed porch and just now attaching the rafter header to the house. The current siding is wood shingle. It will make a mess of the shingle above and below to remove a row to attach the header. Can I just nail/bolt the header right to the siding? Behind the siding is 1/2" ply and then upright 2x4's.
