"Peter Shepherd" - Re: Stepped crack in brick exterior wall 1930's house - When you say 'brick exterior' do you mean single-wythe brick veneer or solid double-wythe brick wall? What is the "DPC"? What type of foundation is it? Without seeing it crack sounds like it could be minor differential settlement. Brick needs tuck-pointing, $6-8/sq ft CAN, if existing mortar is hard it costs more. ...

louisa.king@gmail.com - Stepped crack in brick exterior wall 1930's house - Hi, I've had a search but can't see anything really relating to the above. First time buyer, seen a property I really like, but don't have the funds to get a survey done on this one, find out it's got a big prob, and have to walk away and get survey on another property etc... I know the sensible thing is to walk away but I really do like this place, it's got a lot going for it...

"Peter Shepherd" - Re: Furring vs Sistering joists on 125 yr old ceiling? - Thanks, I did put one in the basement, but as house is Victorian I think it would look oddly modern on 2nd floor 10' ceiling. The older carpenter said jacking up joists is very problematic, better to just level from below, which we've done. Fixed one 1/2" split joist & put hanger on another where ledger had split, & put wires in to allow for easier replacement of knob & tube when th...

"TN" - Temporary kitchen to get Certificate of Occupancy? - About 2 months out from the day we are having our house completed and we just found out our kitchen cabinet manufacturer had a fire and our cabinets are going to be a month or so late. Our builder is trying get another cabinet company to get us a replacement in 6 weeks for installation. My worry here is the cost is going to go up or we aren't getting the custom cabinets we are expecting...

Crack the wood stips off the nails then use vice grips to pull out the nails. Use a piece of of 1/2 inch plywood under the vicegrip as you "roll" the vicegrip down towards the floor after gipping the nailhead. You will still have to do some patching but it shouldnt be bad. . ...

maarass@hotmail.com - Re: Upgrading your HVAC - Thanks for all the replies. I was already sold on the electronic air cleaners. I wasn't so sure about the ventilators. It seems the UV unit can be installed fairly easy, how about the electronic air cleaners ? 1849 huh, Phil you must have a few humidifiers at home. LOL. . ...

"Peter Shepherd" - Re: Water Heater Loco - Not sure about legal or code restrictions, however as it's electric, a closet should be fine as long as it's big enough to take covers off to replace elements; and Temp/Pressure Relief valve extension runs down close to floor (preferably with floor drain not to far away). Accessible crawlspace is okay if tall & dry enough so tank doesn't rust, clearance to service/purge & replace. ...
