"BP" - Re: Raising Ceiling on 1st Floor of a Colonial - Yes you can. In addition to the extensive shoring and bracing, jack platforms, lumber, siding, trim, and plastering there is also the need to cut and rework the plumbing, electrical, heating, and the staircase has to be extended (read: new staircase). Plus anything else that passes from first to second floor. It is quite involved and therefore quite expensive. I just read an articl...

There are legal descriptions that apply to each, and are recognized by every...

scott21230@gmail.com - Re: Limited Attic Space, no insulation, need help fast - If it were my house I would replace the crappy old knob and tube wire with something good like armored cable and have foam put in so you can get good R value with enough space left open for venting (add vents if you need to). I would also be tempted to replace the in house light fixtures with new ones that could support some serious weight so that I could put in ceiling fans if I wanted...

Gus - Re: Electrical - Arc Fault Interupt Breaker - The electrician called yesterday and zeroed in on the ceiling fan I put in! I didn't loose that bet. I'm not sure what their thinking is on this. Does the thunder vibrate wires to short out or does Hunter fans reason a storm is here so lets pick on the humans? "Lil' Dave" - Re: Manufactured Housing Questions - Some outfits will allow you to view their construction assembly. This helps for comparisons, if you know what to look for. Some provide a list of buyers who may allow you to personally ask questions that you generally list. A manufactured home does not come with land and utilities. Some will contract the utitliy install for you. Others, you're own your own. ...

"Lil' Dave" - Re: Electrical - Arc Fault Interupt Breaker - Know the one AFI that trips also affects the kitchen microwave. Have to reset this clock. "Joe" - Re: Timber Deck on Concrete Pool - The only problem I see is if you drill too close to the top of the concrete, you might break out a piece of the pool wall when you tighten the expanding masonary bolt. I would think a 6" to 8" expanding masonary bolt would be about the right length. If you have to drill close to the top (within 2") you might want to use threaded rod and an epoxy. -- JerryD(upstateNY) I...

"w_tom" - Re: Electrical - Arc Fault Interupt Breaker - I don't remember if this wiring technique is documented in the NEC. However electrical inspectors demand it in my locale; for good reason. All smoke detectors get powered from a dedicated 15 amp circuit that only powers the smoke detectors. Any other electrical problem therefore does not remove electricity from smoke detectors. My answer does not help you demand a correction by the e...

"Bruiser" - Timber Deck on Concrete Pool - I have an inground concrete pool and I want to build a timber deck around it. The deck will only be about 250mm from the ground to match the height of the top of pool. My question is, is it safe to attach a ledger board to the pool shell? The pool shell is 300mm thick reinforced concrete, and I would drill in 50mm and insert an expanding masonary bolt to hold the board. My pool builder h...
