HerHusband - Re: Concrete footing or not? - > Can I forgo using a concrete footing and just place this type of concrete > pier on gravel tamped in a 6inch deep hole? I agree with Bob, as long as the soil is halfway decent and you use enough piers to distribute the weight, you shouldn't have any problems. I built our old mobile home decks, on a slope, using nothing more than leveled piers on top of the ground. Because of th...

"Tony M" - Re: Adding a basement to a house with a crawl space - I'm confused. In another post you said you dug right up to the foundation. Lifting the house up five feet is the best technical option but a lousy aestetic option. The front of the house is just off the crest of a hill so that if I look out of the front window I see the hill. If I go up 5 feet Ill see over the hill and the view isnt very nice. Looking out the back of the house ...

"Lil' Dave" - Re: Measuring for new Windows - Windows don't normally sit on the stool. Never heard of an external sill plate. There's more than one type of window frame for window glass. So, there' more than one way to mount the window. Flange mounted windows normally need around 1/2" larger rough framing around the inside perimeter of the rough framed area. This gives you a 1/4" to play with on either side. Some contract...

ransley@webtv.net (m Ransley) - Re: Adding a basement to a house with a crawl space - I dug my areas down to 8ft right to the exterior wall. even areas with no foundation and had no collapse with sand-clay. I just had to use extensive screw jack and beam and monitor hight twice daily. It can be done but it is alot of work. You could run in several feet and even get a powered shovel if you have no mid supports. I only left one area undug to exterior, the chimney was the...
