"minerva nine" - building under stairs - This has always driven me crazy -- is there ANY good way to build an enclosed space under an exterior stair? I've always run into problems with it, because the stairs end up having to act as the roof of the space, and that's a flashing & sealing nightmare of the first order. I've tried to devise various ways to roof the space, below the stairs, and that always comes out looking like ha...

"Bob" - dealing with basement joists that are not level - I'm finishing my basement with 1x3s on the ceiling to attach wallboard. Unfortunately, two of the ceiling joists are about 1/2 inch lower than every other joist. They aren't sagging--they were just put in (with hangers) too low. What's the best way to deal with this so that I can have a level ceiling? I'm thinking about running a 1/2" shim piece between the joists and the 1X3 o...

cjorp@yahoo.com - Re: Radiant panels on the roof - desert sun - Right. Which is why you need an airspace, and why dust shouldn't touch it. Reduce the reflectivity, and you'll lose performance. Touch a part of the building, and the heat will radiate into that part -- think of it as grounding the foil. It is possible to install a radiant barrier foil side up and in contact with an airspace. But over time, it will get dusty, and stop working we...
