"RicodJour" - Graphic representation of statics - interesting for engineers and tech-heads - Here's a really cool link. I wish they had stuff like this when I was in school! http://acg.media.mit.edu/people/simong/statics/Start.html Here's a little intro. "The purpose of these interactive demonstrations is to help you develop a thorough understanding of basic principles of structural behavior, and to provide you with tools and knowledge that will help you to design struc...

3rd eye - Small contractors nightmare - I was on a project yesterday. A brand new town home 4 story unit. In the room next to me was a guy fastening some sort of metal grids to the wall. These were used as a fastener rail/template for Z-brick. Looked like he was using fairly long roofing nails. This was on the fourth floor. The owner was just as proud as could be with her new home. Running around taking pictures whil...

"GLT" - Re: Deck repair? - Sistering would be o.k....depending on how far back your able to sister the new joist's..imho...going back about 8' would be ideal..but then I'm kinda anal about upper decks / balconies being safe.. "Eric Ryder" - Re: Deck repair? - It's hard to make assumptions about the structural design of your deck.... Cantilevered second storey decks regularly suffer rot/insect damage to the joists right at the wall junction. No amount of sistering (outside the wall) would alleviate that type of damage if it has occurred on your home. A posted or a cantilevered deck that retains enough strength could potentially be repaired in...
