"sparetime" - Re: Installing a kitchen exhaust fan - Thanks Al. And, yup, that roof work is the crux of the job for me. But after watching some of these hack subs work on my house... well, it may take me 4 times longer but it'll 8 times better in quality. . ...

"sparetime" - Re: Installing a kitchen exhaust fan - Actually, this is the last correction in our remodel so we can get finalled. Yeah, I learned my lesson 'bout being too honest. I'm anxious to get finalled so we move forward on some other, er, "minor" projects. . ...

"Todd" - Re: Hot water heater question - Sounds like EVERYONE LOVES galvanized ;-) Hopefully, I'll not have the same problem. All joints are threaded and fairly new (less than 2 years old). But then again, it does have a leak already. . ...

"Todd" - Re: Hot water heater question - My leak is in the middle of the pipe (the pipe is around 6" long) rather than at any join. Also, there is no galv to copper connections (thankfully!) . ...

"joer65" - Sofa sectional - I would like to buy a microfiber sofa sectional for my house. I have 3 kids so I'll be needing something sturdy, but don't want to spend a fortune either. I heard Flexsteel was a good brand. Any suggestions on how to get a fair price on a decent piece of furniture? . ...

The Good Guy - Re: Wall Removal Question? - Your guys talked a lot about beam strenth. But how do you deal with longgivity of the beam support? I meanm how do you prevent the rust on the beams, and particularly the support colummns? The columns rest of the comcrete pads, and bottom parts are buried under Before my house was completed in 2000, I noticed the columns rests on the concrete pads that were submerged under water. Th...

Dick - Re: The Hot Water Lobster (Hot Water Circulation system) - It looks like wishful thinking. The hot water pipes would have to be in just the right location to get the water to flow back to the tank. Even then it probably takes a long, long time. Our pump recirculator runs a couple of minutes each time, and it's under pressure. The other problem I see is that not being electric, there is no way to run it only during the times when you need it. ...

Rob Munach - Re: Wall Removal Question? - Ok, now I see what you did (I think). You put a 6x12 (which is larger than the beam in question) in your beam program and placed an arbitrary load of 200 plf on it. You then let it come up with steel beams that had simlar deflections and were not overstressed. The problems with this approach are as follows: 1) This will give conservative stiffness results (not necessarily bad) ...
