"Robert Reznikoff" - Foundation - I'm not sure if this is the right forum to seek advice, but I'll describe my problem and maybe someone can help. I'm planning to build a 12' X 16' shed. I plan to anchor it on piers to save the cost of a poured slab. I live in Alabama so the frost level of the ground is not a problem. I plan to dig 9 holes and use concrete forms to make piers 1 1/2 feet below ground and 1 foot above g...

barnesrich@hotmail.com - Attic/Roof Construction - Hi. I have a mid sized workshop (18x15), that is open up to the rafters. I would like to build a loft/attic space for storage, but am not that familar with how this might be done. Could anyone point me to some web sites/artices on general building practices for something like this? Of course I could wing it on my own, but im sure there are some general rules of thumb, what n...

Stan The Man - Concrete raft for timber garage - A local contractor has just finished making me a concrete raft for a timber frame garage. I asked for it to be 12in thick and it looks only 8-10in thick. I also asked for it to be level and it slopes down to one corner - a drop of 1 to 2ins. I'm tempted to get it broken up and replaced with a new raft but it's a big, messy job (approx 32ft x 14ft) so I'm wondering whether it will do ...

"Ken Moiarty" - Re: Where can I shop for construction equipment (i.e. cement mixer) [Vancouver area]? - "Harbor Freight", hey?... Just brought up their Web site. Yes! Though their nearest store to me is across the border from here(yuck! customs' wait times, plus Cdn. duties and sales taxes, etc...) and at least an hour's drive away, their $189.99 (USD) mixer appears about just what I'm looking for. So unless somebody can recommend a similarly priced mixer being sold somewhere up h...

"Robert" - Simple tent frame structure question - I am looking to create a rectangular tent frame, roughly about six feet wide, four feet deep, and six feet high. I need the top to be flat. I was thinking of purchasing tent frame, which I believe is usually narrow diameter aluminium or plastic tubing, and then connect this tubing with 3-way joints. The joints would need to allow three tubes/poles to connect at right angles. The ...

"Scott" - geothermal energy - Canada - Anyone out there using a geothermal system to heat their building in Canada? I'm looking the possibilities of an open loop system (with my water well) and a closed loop system (vertical). With energy prices as they are I'm pretty open to heating alternatives for the new home we'll be building soon. I'm not sure yet if I'll go with a forced-air furnace or a radiant heat floor so we could...

"les" - Re: Good Garage Door Opener ? - Interference is an interesting possibility, as is an intermitent battery connection.....as battery contacts corrode or otherwise make inadequate coupling. If you know a Ham nearby, or somehow can ask one for help, a good resource might have a spectrum analyzer to survey the RF band of interest and give you an idea if this is in fact the issue. By taking a reading over a period of time,...

Mark and Kim Smith - Re: Where can I shop for construction equipment (i.e. cement mixer) - I'll second that. I don't like too much that comes out of Harbor Freight, but I took a chance on that mixer. Think I caught it on sale at $139 and some change. I ran over 7 1/2 tons through mine and it is still ready for more. Perfect for my sporadic schedule of backyard landscaping. Some pics of the job it did. http://www.bunchobikes.com/pond7.htm In fact, you can see it in ...
