"Grant W. Petty" - refurbishing seals around windows, doors? - My 20+ year old house has quite a number of casement windows as well as seven doorlike structures with windows set in them in a long row along the back wall of the house. The windows, frames, etc. are still in okay shape, but the various rubber weather seals, plastic baseplates, etc., are disintegrating to the point where rain leaks in. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find...

"Grant W. Petty" - correcting slope of slab in screen porch? - The concrete slab in our screen porch slopes toward the house instead of away. This is a problem when it storms and blows rainwater into the porch through the screen or whenever we want to hose it out. Not sure if it was always like this (it was when we bought the house 5 years ago; the house is 20 years old), or whether it simpled settled. Is there a simple way to raise an ...

"Theron" - Firestopping Question - I'm framing my basement. (2x4s running from baseboard to ceiling board, just under 9 ft long, 16 inches on center, pink fiberglass insulation between joists, covered with plastic sheeting, then drywall). The frame is about 1/2"-1" away from the wall. The wall is a masonry wall with a foam pad above grade (so the framed wall is about 1/2"-1" from the pad.) The building inspector ju...

"Harry Muscle" - Re: Rewiring house in Ontario, Canada - The outlets and plugs are all pretty old and yellowing, so I would replace them all even if I wasn't rewiring ... but rewiring will give me that piece of mind I would like ... plus I'm having the fuse panel changed to breakers anyway, and would like to add a few extra circuits, so rewiring only makes sense ... "Don Miller" - Re: Basement concrete floor installation - your opinion re: insulation? - I've got a 1,800 square daylight basement slab over 4" of foam. The only problem is that the slab has cracks here and there. I think it is because the foam panels were not placed over PERFECTLY flat dirt and the weight of the concrete has caused the insulation to settle over the voids. Do what you can to get the subgrade flat and then do what you can to reinforce the slab. Good...

"Ted B." - Re: Can HOA take away my yard? - > Er, no, 'v' is right in this instance. > Only in areas where HOA membership is optional. In many cases, a neighborhood going HOA means that you are in the HOA whether you want to be or not. So even if you didn't agree to it, the HOA can demand that you follow the rules, and can fine you if you don't, and can sell your property (legally) if you don't pay the fines. -Dave ...
