I'm framing my basement. (2x4s running from baseboard to ceiling board, just under 9 ft long, 16 inches on center, pink fiberglass insulation between joists, covered with plastic sheeting, then drywall). The frame is about 1/2"-1" away from the wall. The wall is a masonry wall with a foam pad above grade (so the framed wall is about 1/2"-1" from the pad.) The building inspector just stopped by, and thinks that I should pack the space between the frame and the wall pad with mineral wool to prevent fire getting from a joist into the ceiling space. It sounded like a good idea to me, so I didn't ask him whether that was a code requirement or just a helpful tip. However, I can't find mineral wool anywhere. Most of the employees at the two box stores stared blankly, and the few who knew what it was laughed. I'm even having trouble finding it on the internet. Accordingly: |
