"bill shipley" - Re: re-finishing drywall - I recently had my tape crew skim coat a room that had paper removed, with wall damage like yours. I was surprised to see them wet up the compound and put it on with a paint roller, then they struck it off with a wide knife. After two runs the walls turned out great. It when on much fast this way and the finished wall was first class. Bill "Doggus" wrote in m...

superhawk@sympatico.ca - Re: Dropped ceiling versus wallboard ceiling--which is cheaper? - Wallboard aka drywall is cheaper if you do the labour yourself. If you hang it and have someone tape the joint for you, you're close to the same price, unless someone is finishing the entire room for you anyway, the extra will be marginal. Of course, there are really cheap and cheap looking dropped ceilings that may come under in cost. I rather have drywall. Bob wrote: > ...

"Doggus" - re-finishing drywall - Is it ok to use general purpose joint compound to smooth over the total surface of a wall/ceiling? I made the mistake of letting my wife remove wallpaper (unsupervised) and now I have gouges/torn wall board all over. I'm pretty sure I can get it all smoothed over, just not sure what would be best to use. This is in a highly used bathroom BTW. I retaped all the corners with the self a...

eslawson@juno.com - Questions about a master suite & garage addition - Hello, We are seriously considering an addition to our 50's brick rancher. We are looking at an approx 18x20 master suite w/bath addition that will be added next to a screened porch and the screened porch will be finished to become a sun room/den between the current living room and the new addition. Due to the way the yard slopes, this one-story addition looks to have enough space...

"Bob" - vapor barrier - As I'm finishing my basement, I've put in insulation betwee the wall studs that are against the cinder block walls. Should I put a vapor barrier (black plastic) onto the studs before I put the wallboard on?The basement is dry, but the walls do get a bit of moisture (which is taken care of by the French drain). Bob . ...
