tbasc@bellsouth.net - Re: Adding a basement to a house with a crawl space - It can be done. Look at the sub surface conditions as JME suggests. Water table, surface drainage, and soil type are important. The new space has to be dry and the existing footings supported. Look at how the new space is to be reached from the existing house. A location and enough area for a stair are important. Look at utility connections. Pipes, conduits, and ducts must be avoided...

T - Use of a 'salt' to fill pores in Concrete basement - I understand there is a product that you apply in a water solution that upon soaking into concrete (and/or cement) dries to a crystalline structure that effectively waterproofs the surface. Every twenty years or so El Nino rains enough all week non-stop rain to raise the water table enough to get a couple of inches of ground water in the basement. It happens so infreque...

I'd hire 2 finishers and a laborer, dump a 5 inch slump, keep the finishers half a day and have the nicest looking slab in town and no regrets. "Joe" - Re: Finishing Concrete - Hire someone to pour the concrete. You sound like you have never finished any concrete before. I have finished a lot of concrete and wouldn't even think of trying this by myself. Just the driveway will need 44,000 pounds of concrete in it. Have you ever tried to move 44,000 pounds in a short time ? You will need to screed the concrete as you place it. There is no way you can pull...

"Peter Shepherd" - Lukewarm Tempering Valve - A friend of mine rents an electric water heater from Toronto Hydro. The new plumbing code stipulates installation of a tempering valve to guard against scalding & the remote chance of water tank if set to 120-130 F harbouring Legionella. The first tempering valve they installed limited water temperature to 112 F, so he called to have them fix it. They came & replaced it with one tha...
