Does anyone know of any sound barriers that can be palced around the units that can cut down on the noise but still let the air flow properly? Rustoleum would be a good choice. If you can mask off the area and spray it, that will give the best appearance. The drywall fastener will do a good enough job. If you didn't and your garage is not going to be converted into a living space then it's not worth it to reopen the drywall. One plumber, who also sells water heaters, told me he visited a manufacturer and found out that a water heater with the same specs, but with different length warranties is the exact same unit.
