I have to agree with most of what Steve said, except for the part about houses that are "built on the surface of the land" which makes them susceptible to hurricane winds that make them "crack in half and crumble." :-) No offense Steve, I just found it a humorous choice of words. I live in a 2 story wood frame (yikes!) home about 15 minutes inland in Boca Raton. I have stutters and extra straps on my roof, but if we take a direct hit from a Cat 4 or 5... we're in for some damage. The same could hold true for a high-rise, but the damage to the critical structure would be less because the building is designed to meet special code requirements. In addition to structures with foundations driven into the rocks, I've heard people talk about high-rises that are actually on rollers to help them absorb some of the wind energy and give a little more. Does anyone know if this is true? |
