Buying properties at tax sales

I will soon be attending my first tax sale auction, and would like some advice. Should I bid on my first outing, or just observe? I have heard that these tax sales can be risky. One obvious reason is that there's no time to have the property inspected, the funds are due the same day at the sale I'm attending. Another more disturbing aspect is that, even though you get a tax deed to the property (from my understanding), you cannot get Title Insurance for a period of time (the clerk told me five years). I asked him what the implications of this were, and he said that potentially, someone could come along with a claim to the property and say "Hey, this isn't yours" and you could lose your investment! He did say that he's never had a problem in ten years though.. SO......... I imagine they will be auctioning off houses, land, lots, and possibly even mobile homes on owned lots.
