"You'd need to "lead" the timing - if you wait until you leave for it to turn off, then you walk out on a tank of hot water, which will be cold by the time you get home, and if it doesn't turn back on until then, then you won't have any hot water for hours. " That's true, but it's no different than a timer for heating/cooling a house. Those have to be set to lead in order to get the house to the desired temp before you get home. And unless something is very wrong, a hot water heater turned off in the morning should not be even close to being cold when returning from work. They are pretty well insulated compared to a house. I've seen them last a really long time with no power, as long as you didn't use much water. In fact, I would suspect that may be one of the reasons you don't see timers. Because the temp decays so slowly, there really isn't much energy to be saved that way. I think it . |
