Air conditioner - help me debug?

My wife and I have an externally mounted gas furnace/electric cooling unit which heats and cools a two-room addition on the side of the house. Recently, we noticed that (1) the condenser fan was kicking on when called for but the circulating air blower did not and (2) it was getting darned hot in the addition. The unit is due for a service call anyway, but I would like to have some idea of what might be wrong before a tech arrives. Is there anything I should check before scheduling service? (For instance, we were planning to replace the thermostat with a programmable model anyway; would it make sense to make that replacement first and see if the problem is related?)
