"My wife and I are getting ready to have a house built, but I'm wondering how I can objectivley tell if the builder is doing things well or cutting corners. Are there books on what to look for or, I don't know, places to look that will indicate overall quality of construction for the layman?" Probably most important of all is what's in the contract you sign. Is this truly a custom home, built to your drawings? Or is this where you see a model the builder has built as part of a subdivision and he's building another there for you on a lot he owns? You can negotiate a lot of control in the first situation and put it into the contract. Typically, the builder is paid in stages and the architect and building inspector have to sign off on work as it progresses.
