URD cable to detached garage

I'm running 240V/100A service from my house meter to a detached garage for a garage/workshop. I stopped by my electrical supply store and bought 80' of 2AWG URD (Underground Residential Distribution) cable. This is aluminum-wire service cable designed for direct burial applications though I'm probably going to run it in PVC conduit. My questions are: 1) The URD cable they sold me has two 2AWG conductors (in black jackets) and one 4AWG conductor (black jacket with yellow stripes). The guy at the counter explained that the 2AWG conductors were the phase lines and that the 4AWG conductor was the neutral line and this is what they sell for my type of application. I was surprised as I would have expected all three conductors to be the same 2AWG. The 2AWG wire will handle the 100A no problem, but what about the possibility (however unlikely) that I had a load imbalance on one of the two legs |
