Heating Zone Going On "By Itself"???

What would make a zone (of a multi-zone hydronic heating system) heat up when not needed? For a while it was the "Upstairs" zone, now it is the "1st Floor North" zone (there are 4 heating zones and 2 indirect fired heat exchanger domestic hot water "zones"). This doesn't happen all the time, but repeatedly happens intermittantly. Like the other night I was sitting in the "den" when I noticed that the radiators were hot. The room temps at all times were WAY above set point. We have simple mechanical thermostats, the kind with the mercury bubble in the clear capsule. It can be visually verified that the bubble is NOT in the "ON" position. Why would the system be doing this? As it now is intermittant and short lived I have not verified either way that the circulator pump comes on or not - is it possible to develop a convection loop even through the circulator pump; what if the check valve is hung up, would |
