Because it's a kids room and because if you live there another 10 years you'll redo it anyway, I would not paint the fireplace or worry about the rafters, and just do whatever you feel like with the rest of it; basically ignore the fireplace altogether. Your kids won't care. I'd use light colors with playful accents. Another thing is (not sure how well this works on paneling, priming is needed anyway so maybe it will) to paint one wall with that stuff that turns the surface into a usable chalkboard. Also would get some stickers and stuff like Spongebob or Mickey and put those up. And of course leave room for hanging their artwork. Basically the cheap paneling gives you a throwaway wall surface to go nuts with. . |
