I'm moving to a new area to attend graduate school, and am interested in buying a place to live rather than throwing out money on rent for a few more years like I have done as an undergrad. Is this worthwhile? I will be working to pay rent anyway, and according to mortgage calculators I would have a monthly payment comparable to renting if I took advantage of a federal first home program for a lower down payment. If this is worthwhile, what order should I go about this in? I'd like to live near where I work, but that means knowing where I'll be working. But should I know for a certain what my monthly income will be instead of using an estimate from past employment? It's almost like landing a job and buying need to happen concurrently, but need to happen in order. Oh, and how much does college debt work into this? I'll have about $20,000 of it, and interest on it is deferred until I finish graduate |
