Putting down a patio (graded away from the house) will help since it will direct water away from the house and prevent water from reaching the foundation of your house. However there are other things to be considered: how big will be the patio relative to your house? Will the grading be done where there is no patio? If all the water channeled away by the patio just rushing back toward your house right next to the patio then it won't help you much. Rain water has to go somewhere it's better if you can direct it away from your house and to where it will not flow back.
