The VOLUME of a home would be measured in cubic feet because that is a measure of volume. HEAT LOSS is by NEITHER (directly at least) volume OR square feet. It is by heat loss which is influenced by square foot of exterior SURFACE (walls, roof, and floor) and not JUST interior FLOOR area. Plus air change (ventilation) rate. The same interior square foot OR cubic foor could have very different heat loss characteristics based on shape and how much of the perimeter is exterior, plus differences in insulation.
