We have used Sears softeners since the mid-60's. They are excellent softeners. Whatever you get I would suggest you get one that determines when to regenerate based on usage. Saves on salt. Figure on around $500 plus plumbing. You can buy a reverse osmosis filter for around $150 from places like Costco, Home Depot, etc. and put it in yourself. Not difficult.
