Outdoor kitchen countertop?

Folks, Two winters ago, we built an outdoor kitchen at our cabin in the Cascades in Washington, USA. We used a combo of commercial tiles and handmade tiles, all "glazed and waterproof", for the countertop and backsplash. The winter is subsiding here, and we found that many of the tiles have chipped from ice buildup within the tiles themselves. This happened regardless of horizontal or vertical placement of the tiles. Has anyone advice on what kind of surface would survive tough outdoor conditions? We get rain, snow, and freezing conditions for 3-4 months out of the year. I'm bummed that tile didn't work- the handmade tiles were made as a project with my extended family- and expect wood would be eaten by critters. I think a concrete countertop would also buckle and crack with ice and snow. Any suggestions? Thanks, skg . |
