RO, I wish I really had an answer. The normal product to use is rigid foam board. It has some compressive strength value, though I don't remember what it is. I would be concerned that the carpet padding would not have any compressive strength, and on that basis I would hesitate to use it. It may do swell as a vertical cold barrier on the inside of the footing as a thermal break. Random thoughts - I usually do not answer if I do not know or have experience.
