Just another example of more specialising of drywall types. Years ago 1/2" GWB was enough in Canada, then came NAFTA and we allowed the cheaper, lower quality US board into the country. Canadian manufacturers promptly changed their formulas to match the American board and the National Building Code was adjusted to allow for lower quality board. Depending on the usage of the room below you may want to stay with 5/8" as it deadens the sound slightly better.
