Opening up a Modified Queen truss

We would like to build a room in our attic. There is currently a bonus room in the 'center' of the attic and we'd like to open up a door and finish the rest of the attic. The challenge is that the roof is supported with what I believe is a modified queen truss system. The truss is on 24 inch centers, and spans a considerable distance (30+ feet). I don't know if the center is load bearing, but it could be as there is an interior wall right under the center. I know I need to get a structural engineer to review it, and have that setup, but didn't want to spend the money if there isn't any chance this will work. I've done homework and it looks like a 'room in the attic' truss would be perfect, but since a truss is pre-built, we'd be 'hand building' the conversion. It would make a nice room, probably 20x20 or more, for my home office and let the kids have the bonus room back. Any thoughts? Tom . |
