There's a bit of style and personal preference when it comes to roof overhang. In our area (Pacific Northwest), I see roofs ranging from no overhang, to two foot overhangs all the way around. Heck, there's even a house downtown that has rounded overhangs. Those have to be a pain to shingle and waterproof. Obviously, the larger two foot overhang will offer more protection for the building and help block sun in the summer. I personally think it looks stupid, but that's just my opinion... :) Before we built our house and garage, I drew up the roofs with various overhangs. I eventually settled on 12" overhangs at the eaves, and 6" on the gable ends. I just like the proportions of these measurements. |
