I have a "time of use" electric meter in my home. I get lower electric rates from 10 pm to 6 am. My electric water heater is on a timer and only runs between 5:30 am and 5:55 am. I then have enough hot water for a shower and then warm water for the rest of the day/evening. (I live alone, so just one shower a day needed - this probably would not work for two or more people unless larger capacity water heater.) And this is with a regular electric water heater. Also I do this with my freezer - on a timer, only runs from 10:05 pm to 5:55 am, then food stays frozen all day. So since this works with "off the shelf" products, I would think it could work even better with something specifically designed for this.
