Re: moving carport posts outside roof perimeter

Jils, > we have a single carport supported by a timber beam spanning four > upright posts. we'd like to move three of the posts about 60cm beyond > the edge of the roof, and have them connect to the beam by some sort > of bracket. (this will increase the floor space by enough to park two > cars side by side) > i just thought i might come across someone that's seen supporting > posts outside a roof perimeter before ... and maybe there's a good way > to do it. guess i'll just have to be inventive! I'm no engineer, but if it were me I would install new posts and a new longer beam (properly sized), to replace the existing posts and beam. You would need to install diagonal braces to provide lateral support so the whole thing doesn't just blow over in the wind. And/Or bury the posts deep enough into the ground so they can't move.
