Thanks for the NIOSH link, I enjoyed reading several of the internal links. I found that cedar siding can be stripped chemically, so hope for less dust from that source, though my recollection is that the less toxic strippers take many more applications & time to work. I'm also going to try a 3M AirMate Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) bought on ebay for grinding operations. I agree that many other dusts are under-rated. The list of building products containing asbestos refer to those products made before 1978 that were known to contain varying levels of asbestos, not current manufacturing practice. When doing demolition in houses I use the list at http://www.whitelung.org/pubs/aith/materials.html as a rough guide for what might contain asbestos. Asbestos plant workers had 11 times the normal rate of lung cancer, and 55 times greater if they smoked as well, according to a three-volume Ontario |
