Hi Guys Am I missing something here. Firstly, as many have said, assuming this is a standard off the shelf I beam, then you can install any way up ( but not sideways ) i.e. the web is vertical Secondly if you are getting 3/8" deflection in 13' span this is just about right for max deflection ( 1/360) not sure if your regs are the same in your part of the world However, I hope the beam is fully loaded when deflecting this much Next, putting in stronger posts will do nothing to strengthen the beam, unless you use wide cap plates and gusset stiffeners, which may or may not be aesthetically possible The clear and obvious way to proceed with this, is to ask your structural Engineer to check the calcs, or perhaps it may be prudent to use an independent one Hope this helps David . |
