Replacement Vinyl Windows

Wanted to replace some old wooden windows with vinyl ones to match the rest of the house (ran out of money last time ). While looking at different windows I noticed that all the ones I looked at had a large fin around the window, to attach it to the framing around the opening I guess. But when I look at a number of DIY books they show windows that come with a sill that screws into the base wood and then the window snaps over that and is screwed into the frame through the sides and then windows put back in. I don't find those available anywhere though. I live in CA. so maybe that type isn't legal here. It doesn't look like a major project to install them except I can't figure out what to do with the fin? As I am typing this I am wondering if you just put the window in place, the fin bends towards the front of the window and you nail it to the sides, top and sill but that doesn't look/sound right. |
