I'm building a freestanding deck and failed my footer inspection. Inspector stated that the footers closest to the house (they're within 12") were not on firm enough soil. After the inspection, I shoved a piece of rebar into the bottom of the hole, and without too much effort I managed to get it go another 24" into the ground. Ok, so the inspector may be onto something. I'm in a new house. Moved in ~6 months ago. Clay soil. Walk-out basement. Backyard slopes away nicely from rear of house. House footers appear to extend ~30" below grade. (Note that when I dug the footer holes closest to the house, I noticed the soil was quite wet. Much wetter than the rest of the footers.) Ok, so I figured I'd just be a man, and dig until I got to firm soil. Had to hit it eventually, once I got through the construction-backfill soil that probably hadn't settled yet. |
