Ask for references from people you know who've built or done remodel work recently. Once you get one really good sub, it can open the floodgates for more of the same. This is how it's worked on the house I'm building. I sort of randomly happened on a good excavation contractor through a guy I had do some logging for me. I used him for all my dirt work, and in turn he put me on to many of my other subs. Those guys then refered me to other subs as they've been needed. In a smaller community like I live in, all the tradesmen pretty much know one another. The good ones know who the other good ones are. Birds of a feather flock together... Incidently, for the most part I agree with the advice to avoid the guys driving $40K Pickup Trucks.
