Bricks: Round holes vs. Square holes

Which type of brick holds up better under stress? Those with round holes or those with square holes. This may sound like a stupid question, but I have a very good reason for asking it. I work at a brick manufacturing plant. About six months ago we switched from round holes in the bricks to square holes, supposedly to lessen the weight, so truckers could carry more bricks on their load. Ever since then we have had a rash of kiln wrecks, that is, bricks collapsing in the kiln at 2000 degrees. We had kiln wrecks before with the round holes, but not to this extent. If there are any construction or physics geniuses out there, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks, DB . |
