Have similar red stain, actually a ring at the water level lne, in my toilet bowls at recently built house. Many things I've read say this is due to hard water. A general stain, however is something else. Here's an excerpt: The reddish-pink color frequently noted in the bathrooms on shower stalls, tubs, tile, toilets, sinks and toothbrush holders is caused by the growth of the bacterium serratia. The genus serratia has five species, most of which produce a non-diffusible red pigment (prodigiosin). Serratia is very common in the environment. It is commonly isolated from soil, water, plants, insects, and vertebrates (including man). The bacteria can be introduced to the house through any of the above mentioned sources. The bathroom provides a perfect environment (moist & warm) for bacteria to thrive. My water is from a 550 foot deep well. Water has been tested twice. |
