kitchen porch stair calculations

Hello. I am planning the steps for my new kitchen porch. The total required rise is 40". It appears that either five or six steps could be appropriate. Five steps gives me an 8" riser; six steps gives 6.67". The 8" riser would indicate a tread of about 9 to 10 inches, I believe. For the 6.67" riser, a tread of about 10-3/4" seems appropriate, according to one formula I have seen. First of all, should I go with five steps, or six? And what tread width do you recommend? I have plenty of flexibility on the overall run of the stairway. Thanks -Mark . |
