The heat strip is a metal framework with the heating element wire strung in a pattern. The heating wire itself is generally a coil (sort of like an old screendoor spring) made of a nickel-chrome type of alloy. The amount of kw in the unit differs simply because someone specified differing amounts for different units. The specified heating capacities are just someones best guess on what would be required for the heat load and the probable weather. Strip heat (or Emergency Heat) is turned on either manually or automatically when the heat pump proper can't deliver enough heat. This can happen when the outside temperature is too low, when there is some malfunction, extreme weather conditions cause iceup, etc. Your two proposals are fairly far apart, so it is probable that one of them is not doing so well at spec'ing a system. It would be a good idea to get at least one more opinion to find out. |
