In the long run, I bet your best option is to buy a new gas furnace/AC combination. In some cases, you can heat with the heat pump and just use the gas for supplemental heat instead of electric heating strips. However, a modern, 95% efficient gas furnace will probably heat your house cheaper than any other source. Heat pumps work at a lower temperature differential than forced air furnaces, so going to a heat pump usually requires larger ductwork and return air plenums. Your existing ducts may be adequate for air conditioning, or maybe not. The best thing you can do is find a GOOD mechanical contractor, and discuss the installation with him. He can help you compare prices for gas/AC and straight heat pump installation, |
