Re: OT? protecting 4x4 fence posts set in concrete

Hello, I saw an old episode of TOH where they installed composite fence posts below ground set in the cement. Holes were then bored into the bottoms of the exposed 4x4 wooden posts, into which they placed PVC sleeves. Then they used 1" rebar inserted into the composite post base and placed their wooden 4x4 post over the top of that. If I recall correctly, they also used some sort of collar around the base at ground level to divert any water. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any of these composite fence posts. It seemed like an interesting idea that would eliminate any concern about wooden posts embedded in cement or in contact with the ground. I also got the impression that you could easily remove a section of fence without too much trouble. Along similar lines, why not just set a length of regular chain link type galvanized fence post or 1" rebar in the ground in cement and then place the |
