If you want smooth drywall joints and even texture and paint then do not use anything that stands out from the surface of the drywall. Most tapers use application tools (Ames and others) These give great joints and are easy to sand. Anything sticking out past the surface makes the box tool or knife skip. There is definitely more time and effort to work around protrusions of any type. Most texture is sprayed on and most paint is sprayed on and back rolled. Someone suggested a bit of insulation, maybe some custom cardboard cut outs would work. Whatever you attempt to use needs to be below the surface of the drywall IMHO.
