Cedar post fence post blocks

I put up some 6"x6"x8' cedar columns on our home over the weekend and the wife was so thrilled with the look she wants me to do the backyard fence with the same cedar posts. I was not thrilled with her idea as these suckers cost $51 per. I'm wondering if this is feasible: auger a hole and pour a concrete column resulting in a 2-4 inch portion above ground to mount the cedar timber. I want the timber above ground to keep it dry and away from our subterranean termites. How could I mount the cedar to the concrete column and it be strong enough as if I had buried the cedar in the ground instead? Not sure if this is more cost effective than just burying the timbers. I figure I can get two posts out of an 8' timber rather than just one going this route. P.S. are there any good forums around to discuss stuff like this? I'm a member at a couple of welding sites, woodworking sites etc but never |
